01 October 2012 As nurses we want to be able to provide dignified care for patients. People complain that dignity is difficult to define, but we can recognise care where dignity has been ignored or compromised in some way.
At the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham we have focused particularly on vulnerable patients whose dignity is most at risk. We have recruited 390 staff who have either volunteered to be their ward or departmental champions or have signed up online to be part of the national Dignity in Care campaign (www.dignityincare.org.uk/DignityCareCampaign). We celebrate champions’ achievements at an annual birthday lunch and at our best-in-care awards
